501 Run Club begins 2026 with weekly island fitness runs
The community-based 501 Run Club kicked off the New Year with its first run of 2026 on Friday, January 2nd. The club hosts weekly runs every Friday at 5:30AM to promote running and encourage healthy living on the island. The activity is open to everyone, including visitors. Participants meet with organizers at Central Park every Friday morning. The run/walk typically covers 5 kilometres, taking participants north from Central Park onto Pescador Drive. Runners loop around the San Juan roundabout, return along Pescador Drive, and finish back at Central Park.

Ada Cordova Joins National Launch of Women’s Football Development Plan
The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) officially launched Belize’s Women’s Football Strategic Plan on December 11th, unveiling a bold, forward-looking roadmap to increase opportunities for girls and women throughout the country who are passionate about football. The launch united several key stakeholders supporting the initiative, including Ada Cordova, an island footballer and coach who has represented Belize on the senior women’s national football team.

Boca Bombers Maintain Lead in Island League Football
The Island League Football Tournament is heating up at the Ambergris Stadium, with teams competing each week for a place in the upcoming quarterfinals. Boca Bombers FC continues to lead the Island League Football Tournament standings with 20 points. Sea Bulls FC is second with 16 points, while Team Alaia remains third with 14 points. Sharks FC currently sits in fourth place with 11 points, and Shark Shooters rounds out the top five with ten points.

Shark Cup Finals Bring Excitement and Victory to San Pedro
The Shark Cup volleyball finals were held on Sunday, December 14th, at the Angel Nunez Auditorium, bringing together the top teams for an afternoon of competitive volleyball. Organized by the San Pedro Volleyball Association, the tournament began at 3PM and featured under-15, senior, and co-ed divisions, with more than 120 youth and adult players participating.

Islander Jaime Ramirez proudly represented Belize at the 75th edition of Miss and Mister El Salvador, winning first place in the Men’s Physique 170 cm division. The island bodybuilder competed against top athletes in his category, which emphasizes balanced musculature and overall aesthetics, on December 7th in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Jesus ‘Levi’ Contreras wins End of the World half-marathon for a second time
Jesus “Levi” Contreras, widely known as the “Yellow Flash of Belize,” won the End of the World half-marathon in Placencia, southern Belize, for the second time on Saturday, December 7th. Contreras captured the Male Category after completing the 13.1 mile course, which he first conquered in 2023. The runner, who placed second last year, said he prepared more intensely for this year’s edition of the annual event.

Sharks Cup wraps up third-place matches ahead of finals
The Sharks Cup indoor volleyball tournament reached a decisive Stage in Week 10 on Sunday, December 7th, with semifinal clashes and third-place matches at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium. Six high-energy games ran from 3PM through 8PM as youth, senior, and co-ed teams battled for a coveted place in the championship finals scheduled for next weekend.

SPHS Female Sharks Fall Just Short at Northern Regionals
On Saturday, November 29th, the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) hosted the Northern Regional Basketball Championship at the Corozal Civic Center. By the end of the competition, Bishop Martin High School (BMHS) emerged as the Northern Regional Female Champions, while Muffles College High School secured the title of Northern Regional Male Champions. Representing the Cayes was the San Pedro High School Female Basketball Team, the Sharks, who finished in second place.

Boca Bombers continue to lead Island League standings
At the end of the sixth week, Boca Bombers FC continues to lead the standings of the Island League Football Tournament with 14 points. Sea Bulls FC trails closely behind with 13 points, while Team Alaia has climbed to third place with 11 points. Shark Shooters FC sits in fourth place with ten points, and Jokers FC, which previously led the tournament, now sits in fifth place with nine points as competition intensifies.

San Pedro Lions Club leads 5K Diabetes Glow Run/Walk
The San Pedro Lions Club, in partnership with the 501 Run Club and the San Pedro Town Council, held a 5K Glow Run/Walk on November 28th to increase awareness about diabetes. The event, which commemorated this year’s World Diabetes Day, observed on November 14th, was postponed earlier in the month due to inclement weather.

SPHS Girls’ Basketball Team Heads to Regional Finals
On November 29th, the San Pedro High School female basketball team will compete in the regional championships at 9AM at the Corozal Civic Center. The team, known as the Female Sharks, will face the top contenders from the northern zones as they aim to build on their success as reigning national champions and Zone 4 winners after their strong performance against Caye Caulker.
